Was Jesus born before 0 AD ?

Many Christians often wonder why their Bibles list Jesus as being born between the years 4 and 6 BC.  After all- isnt our calendar centered around Jesus Christ's entrance into this world?  When was the calendar first used? Who invented it?  How old was Jesus when he was crucified/ resurrected?  Many christians assume that Jesus entered the world in 0 BC/ AD and then died and resurrected at around 33 AD making Him 33 years old at the completion of His ministry.

While the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are by far... THE MOST important events in the history of our world... the actual dates of these important events are a bit unclear. For years, Christian followers and scholars have attempted to put together all of the pieces of the historical puzzle.

Around the year 525 AD, a monk by the name of Dionysius Exiguss, developed a new method for calculating Easters and this eventually led to his development of a new calendar system based on the entrance of the Savior Jesus Christ into the world.  His calculations created the BC / AD calendar system which is widely used in today's day and age. The BC obviously being an abbreviation for the period of time before the birth of Christ and the AD meaning "Anno Domini." The words "Anno Domini" are derived from midieval Latin and mean "in the year of our Lord."  While it is unknown exactly how he made his calculations it is believed that he used portions of scripture to form his conclusions.

Many believe that he used the Gospel of Luke which reads  in chapter 3 verse 1: "In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea"  and then goes on to describe the beginning of the ministry of John the Baptist, as well as Jesus Himself in verse 23 where Luke states that Jesus was 30 years old at the start of His ministry.

Exiguss, however, made one somewhat huge error in his calculations.  He failed to take into consideration the death of King Herod the great in the year 4 BC. We all know that King Herod the Great was still alive at the time of Jesus's birth.

We find in Matthew 2:16 "When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi."

This passage not only shows us that Herod was still alive, but also hints that Jesus was 2 years old or younger when the king issued this decree.

As for Jesus' actual date of death and resurrection, there are many theories. While we will not get into the many intricacies of these theories, the two most prominent theories still depict the year to be either 30 AD or 33 AD.   While we do not know the actual age of Jesus at the time of the crucifixion, we can speculate that He was most likely between the ages of 33-38 years old at the time of death & resurrection.
